A second-tier European professional club rugby tournament – now officially named the European Rugby Challenge Cup – was established in 1996.

For the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons, the name of the tournament was the *European Conference.

For the 1998/99, 1999/2000 and 2000/01 seasons, the name of the tournament was changed to the **European Shield.

From 2001/02 until 2013/14, the tournament was named the Challenge Cup and was sponsored by Parker Pen for the 2002/03 and 2003/04 seasons, and by Amlin from 2009/10 until the end of the 2013/14 season.
