Glasgow gunning for back-to-back quarter-finals

Duncan Weir is Glasgow's leading points-scorer in this season's EPCR Challenge Cup with 15

Glasgow Warriors are seeking a second successive EPCR Challenge Cup quarter-final when they welcome Dragons RFC to Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday.

The Scottish region reached the last eight last season after dropping out of the Heineken Champions Cup, but suffered a heartbreaking 35-27 defeat at Lyon despite leading by 14 points at one stage.

Glasgow reached the Round of 16 this campaign through EPCR Challenge Cup Pool A, finishing second after recording three wins from four home and away clashes with Bath Rugby and USAP.

Dragons, meanwhile, scraped through Pool B, with a 31-31 draw at Emirates Lions and a 21-15 success at Section Paloise enough to see them progress in fifth place.

The game kicks off at 17:30 (UK & Irish time) and is available to watch on ViaPlay-Premier Sports, beIN SPORTS and FloRugby.

Key quote

Dragons RFC head coach Dai Flanagan: β€œIf we can’t match the set piece and are not disciplined, then they will have entry after entry and will score more points. It will be a tough game away at Glasgow. They will have plenty of internationals on show and we need to be better, or it could be a tough day.”

Glasgow Warriors

  • Jamie Dobie and Josh McKay have made the two highest total try assists in the competition: four and three respectively.
  • Jack Dempsey has beaten more defenders than any other forward. His total of 13 is second only to Stade FranΓ§ais Paris’ Nadir Megdoud.
  • Glasgow have conceded as many yellow cards as any other team (five).

Dragons RFC

  • Sam Davies has attempted more drop-goals than any other player (two), failing to get either through the uprights.
  • Bradley Roberts has crossed the gain line the most in the competition, a total of 28 times, accounting for 72.7% of his carries.

Five-try Matthews helps Glasgow into quarter-finals

Glasgow Warriors hooker Johnny Matthews crosses for his fifth try against Dragons RFC in the EPCR Challenge Cup Round of 16

Five tries from Johnny Matthews steered a rampant Glasgow Warriors into their second successive EPCR Challenge Cup quarter-final after defeating Dragons RFC 73-33 at Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday.

Hooker Matthews is the first man to score five tries in one match for Glasgow and helped them earn a quarter-final at home to Emirates Lions next weekend.

Matthews crossed forΒ  a first-half quadruple after George Horne’s early score to put the hosts in front at the break, with Dragons down to 14 just after the half-hour mark due to a high tackle from Aki Seiuli.

Dragons kept plugging away, though, with tries from Jordan Williams, Rio Dyer and Jared Rosser keeping them within 14 points at the break.

But Glasgow and Matthews were simply unstoppable, as he added another before George Turner and then Cole Forbes notched their seventh and eighth scores.

Huw Jones scored the ninth on the hour, with Kyle Steyn crossing for the tenth eight minutes from time, and then the 11th in the closing seconds.
