Worcester bid for French repeat

Ryan Mills, who is set to make his 100th appearance for Worcester Warriors on Saturday

Worcester Warriors will be aiming for an action replay of their superb win at Stade Francais Paris last season when they face fellow TOP 14 team Castres Olympique on French soil in Pool 1 of the European Rugby Challenge Cup on Saturday.

That success in the French capital for the English side ended a winless sequence of 11 matches on the road against TOP 14 opponents.

Key facts

  • This is the first European meeting between the clubs.
  • It is over 11 years since Castres beat English opposition in the Challenge Cup, the last one coming against Leeds Carnegie in 2007/08.
  • Castres are unbeaten in 10 home games in Europe, their last defeat at Stade Pierre Fabre in either competition coming in the 2015/16 Challenge Cup against Sale Sharks.

Ryan Mills of Worcester Warriors

Castres Olympique continued their winning streak in Europe on home soil when they beat Worcester Warriors 17-9 in the Challenge Cup at Stade Pierre Fabre.

Ryan Mills led out the visitors to mark his 100th appearance for the club, and they got off to the best start when Duncan Weir opened the scoring for Warriors with an eighth-minute penalty.

But the hosts soon assumed control, with Filipo Nakosi scoring the first try and Benjamin Urdapilleta converting.

Baptiste Delaporte found a gap in the Warriors defence just before the half-hour, powering through, and Urdapilleta once again added the conversion.

Weir kicked another penalty shortly afterwards as Warriors opted for points on the board rather than attempting to run it in, leaving them trailing 14-6 at the break.

That remained the tactic, with Weir scoring another penalty to open the scoring in the second half.

Warriors played the last ten minutes with just 14 men after Gerrit-Jan van Velze was sent to the sin-bin for tackling a player without the ball, and Urdapilleta made the most of it, kicking a penalty late on after Worcester were caught offside.

It was the first European meeting between the clubs – and the first time since 2007/08 that Castres have beaten English opposition in the Challenge Cup.
