Stockdale

Ulster Rugby's Jacob Stockdale was the province's top try-scorer last season.

Ulster Rugby will look to make it five home wins from as many matches against Leicester Tigers in the European Cup when they meet in a Pool 4 clash on Saturday evening at Kingspan Stadium, live on BT Sport from 17:30 BST.

  • Ulster’s four home victories against Leicester Tigers have come by an average margin of 23 points.
  • Leicester are on a four-game losing run, their worst ever run in the European Cup.
  • Tigers have lost on seven of their last eight trips to Ireland in the tournament. A 31-19 victory over Munster in 2015 was their only victory in that time.
  • Only Exeter and Leicester conceded fewer penalties per game last season than Ulster (8.7). They were also the only side not to receive either a yellow or red card.
  • Jacob Stockdale was the province’s top try scorer in 2017/18 (3 tries). He also has more clean breaks (13) in the pool stage than any other player bar Montpellier’s Nemani Nadolo (16).

Ulster make fine start to European campaign

John Cooney was named Heineken Man of the Match at the Kingspan Stadium in Belfast.

John Cooney’s inspired second-half performance gave Ulster Rugby a convincing win over two-time European champions Leicester Tigers at the Kingspan Stadium.

The first-half was evenly-matched between the two sides and it was fly-half George Ford – who was sin binned later on in the half – who converted a penalty kick and put the Tigers ahead at half-time.

However, it was a different story in the second 40 minutes, with the Irish province scoring a try within minutes of the restart.

Lock Al O’Connor powerful drive over the line and Cooney’s conversion put Ulster ahead and it was nearly two tries in a matter of minutes for the home side, but Iain Henderson’s effort was ruled out following a forward pass.

Former Sale Shark Will Addison scored Ulster’s second and Heineken Man of the Match, Cooney, added the extras once again.

Young full-back Michael Lowry was impressive throughout and it was his fellow back, Jacob Stockdale, who picked up from where he left off last season with a try in the corner for Ulster’s third.

Tigers centre, Manu Tuilagi, did score a consolation try with 10 minutes remaining in wet conditions but Ulster stayed ahead in Belfast.

Leicester host Scarlets next Friday at Welford Road, while Ulster travel to Paris to face last season’s finalists, Racing 92.
