It was Munster’s team of 2006-08 who edged out their Irish rivals Leinster (09-12) after over 500 votes were placed, with the double European champions claiming 320 of the votes.

Exeter Chiefs 31 Racing 92 27

Exeter Chiefs lifted the Heineken Champions Cup for the first time after a breathtaking final at Ashton Gate, holding off Racing 92 to come out victors in an all-time European classic.

The English side led throughout but that doesn’t tell the full story of a final that saw eight tries shared by the two sides, and a thrilling final ten minutes as Exeter clung on with Sam Hidalgo-Clyne coming up with a crucial turnover late on.

Luke-Cowan Dickie, Sam Simmonds and Harry Williams barged over to give Exeter a nine-point lead at the break.

But Racing roared back with Simon Zebo's second try and Camille Chat's surge bringing them within a point. Exeter, down to 14 men after Tomas Francis' late yellow card, held out heroically to lift the title.

Exeter Chiefs 28 Stade Toulousain 18

Exeter Chiefs put in a power-packed display to defeat Toulouse at Sandy Park and reach a first Heineken Champions Cup final in the club’s history.

Two tries in each half – including a brace from Harry Williams – proved crucial for Exeter who were clinical from close range throughout a titanic semi-final tussle.

The French champions began well with a couple of Thomas Ramos penalties to show for their early dominance. But Exeter dug in and close-range tries from Williams and Sam Simmonds gave them a narrow half-time lead.

A second try from Williams, Joe Simmonds waltzed in to ensure Matthis Lebel's try would not alter the result.

Exeter Chiefs 38 Northampton Saints 15

Exeter Chiefs will feature in the Heineken Champions Cup semi-finals for the first time after defeating a dogged Northampton Saints side 38-15 at Sandy Park

Jack Maunder and Jacques Vermeulen's tries checked Saints' fast start, but Northampton were within four at the break after Teimana Harrison went over.

Jack Nowell's superb try two minutes after the restart and Jonny Hill's score gave Exeter breathing space.

Flanker Vermeulen then capped Exeter's win with a startling step, a turn of pace and his second try.

Glasgow Warriors 31 Exeter Chiefs 31

Exeter Chiefs secured a spot in the Heineken Champions Cup quarter-finals after a thrilling 31-31 draw with Glasgow Warriors at Scotstoun.

Glasgow crossed twice inside eight minutes through Tommy Seymour and Huw Jones but Exeter capitalised twice on Glasgow yellow cards to run in tries by Matt Kvesic and Jacques Vermeulen after Nic White's score.

Glasgow levelled twice through George Horne and Nikola Matawalu and had a late Sam Johnson effort disallowed, but Exeter did almost snatch victory in the final moments, with Stuart Hogg striking the bar with a long-range penalty on his return to Scotstoun.
