An extra-time interception try from wing Bryan Habana sealed Toulon’s third successive European Cup final at the expense of a battling Leinster team in front of a 35,116 crowd in Marseille.

The South African flyer swooped on an Ian Madigan pass near the halfway line as the Irish province attempted to capitalise on their one-man advantage, after Toulon lock Ali Williams had been sin-binned on 86 minutes.

Up to that point, the match had been littered with mistakes as both teams struggled to cope with the greasy conditions.

Four penalties each from Madigan and Toulon’s Wales full-back, Leigh Halfpenny, had left the match deadlocked at 12-12 after 80 minutes.

Two more Halfpenny penalties to one from Madigan nudged Toulon back in front at the start of extra time, but Williams’ yellow card looked to have swung the match Leinster’s way, until Habana produced his moment of magic.

Halfpenny converted the try to give him a match tally of 20 points and that was enough to see off another Leinster rally, with flanker Sean O’Brien diving over for an unconverted try after a line-out drive in the dying minutes.

Toulon subsequently went on to become the first club to win a hat-trick of European titles by beating ASM Clermont Auvergne 24-18 in the final.
