Powerful New Zealand threequarter Malakai Fekitoa, who has played 24 Tests for the All Blacks, has joined RC Toulon for the next two seasons and so is set to face Bath Rugby, Benetton Rugby and Scarlets in Pool 5 of the European Rugby Champions Cup in 2017-18. We look back at six other leading overseas players to have joined the TOP 14 giants in recent years.

Tana Umaga (New Zealand): Toulon's signing of the 74-cap All Blacks legend in 2006, after they had been relegated to Pro D2, showed French rugby they meant business. Umaga, who captained New Zealand to 19 wins in 21 Tests, played only seven matches for Toulon, but returned in 2008-9 to coach them before going back to New Zealand.

Jonny Wilkinson (England): The overseas signing who captured the hearts of the Toulon faithful as he directed them to consecutive European Cup trophies in 2013 and 2014, and the TOP 14 trophy in 2014, after which he retired, having chalked up 1,884 points in five years for them. England's record points-scorer was also the EPCR European Player of the Year in 2013.

George Gregan (Australia): Australia's most-capped captain of all time joined Toulon after equalling Will Carling's record of leading an international side 59 times, at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. The wily scrum-half, who won a record 139 caps for the Wallabies, played the rest of the 2007-8 season for the French side, making 28 appearances, before moving to Japanese team Suntory Sungoliath.

Andrew Mehrtens (New Zealand): The one-time All Black record points-scorer also featured for Toulon for one season, in 2007-8, and made a big impression, harvesting 261 points in 25 matches to guide them back into the TOP 14 before leaving for Racing 92. He had made his name on the international scene by notching 967 points in 70 Tests for New Zealand.

Gonzalo Quesada (Argentina): One of the first batch of high-profile overseas signings to join Toulon in 2006, after Mourad Boudjellal took over the club. The fly-half won 39 caps for Argentina between 1996 and 2003, and was the leading points-scorer at the 1999 Rugby World Cup. Played one season for Toulon, scoring 177 points, before moving into coaching in France.

Carl Hayman (New Zealand): One of Toulon's most successful overseas signings, as he appeared in their three consecutive European Cup wins from 2013 to 2015 and captained them in the last one before retiring from professional rugby at the end of that season. The prop, who won 45 caps for New Zealand, made 145 appearances in total for Toulon between 2010 and 2015.
