His goalkicking was a big help in the Cheetahs reaching the EPCR Challenge Cup Round of 16 last season, so it was unfortunate that he missed the 36-21 defeat at eventual winners RC Toulon.

The 26-year-old kicked five penalties and two conversions in his four pool stage appearances for a tally of 19 points, and finished joint fifth overall in the penalty kicks category.

It was Masuku’s 78th minute penalty that opened up the eventual five-point gap as Toyota Cheetahs marked their EPCR debut with a 21-16 victory at Section Paloise in Round 1.

He was passed over as goalkicker for Toyota Cheetahs’ 45-26 Round 2 home loss to Scarlets, but landed two conversions and a penalty as they ran the Welsh region close in the return at Parc y Scarlets, where the South African side were squeezed out 20-17.

Masuku was then Toyota Cheetahs' matchwinner in Round 4, when he kicked a last-gasp penalty to send them through to the Round of 16 via a 9-6 win over Section Paloise.

The fly-half landed three penalties from four attempts, with his pressure kick from distance the deciding factor in a scrappy, heavy-hitting affair at the Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi.
