Quins’ outstanding form in Pool B, where they finished second on points difference only to Leicester Tigers after four wins from four games, was in no small way down to their multi-talented fly-half.

Not only has Smith's goalkicking been 84.2% accurate with 16 successful kicks (four penalties and 12 conversions) from 19 attempts, but he has also scored two tries.

The 22-year-old has displayed incredible nerve too with his goalkicking, with only one of the English champions’ four victories having been by more than three points and his trusty right boot having played an important part in those.

2 Jack Carty (Connacht Rugby) 43

Carty had an even higher success rate from the tee, landing 88.9% of his 18 kicks as he helped Connacht into fifth place in Pool B and a slot in the last 16.

The Irish province won only one of their four games – their opener at home to Stade Français Paris – so it was the three losing bonus points that were vital in getting them through and the 29-year-old fly-half was a key cog with his try, drop-goal, 13 conversions and three penalties.

That late drop-goal at Leicester Tigers in Round 2 limited the English club’s victory to a 29-23 margin as well as giving him a match tally of 18 points, while he converted four tries in the home 29-28 loss to Leicester and kicked 11 points in the 37-31 defeat at SFP.

3 Ross Thompson (Glasgow Warriors) 41

Glasgow narrowly failed to make the last 16 of the Heineken Champions Cup, but that wasn’t the fault of the 22-year-old Thompson.

In his first full season of European rugby, the fly-half kicked 11 penalties and four conversions, with his five three-pointers in the 22-7 home win against Exeter Chiefs in Round 2 being crucial in the Warriors’ solitary Pool A victory.

Thompson was also part of a valiant Glasgow effort to reach the last 16 in their final pool game – a 30-38 home loss to Stade Rochelais – when he notched 11 points via three penalties and a conversion.

It’s tight at the top in the Heineken Champions Cup points-scorers list at the close of the pool stages, with five points separating the first three.
