Wacokecoke winner at the death

George Wacokecoke’s try in the final play of the game handed Newcastle a 17-13 win at Biarritz Olympique as they continued their winning start in Pool A.

Sam Stuart’s early score saw Falcons ahead at half-time, with Brett Herron’s penalty keeping the hosts within four points.

Brett Connon’s three-pointer moved Newcastle further ahead after the break, but Biarritz levelled with just over a quarter of an hour to play as Tornike Jalagonia went over and Gilles Bosch converted.

Herron’s second penalty of the game put the TOP 14 side within touching distance of victory on 72 minutes, but Wacokecoke crossed in the corner with the clock in the red to steal the win for Falcons.

Jackson kicks Irish to victory

London Irish grabbed a second win in Pool C as Paddy Jackson converted Olly Cracknell’s 77th minute try to secure a 21-20 home triumph over Edinburgh Rugby.

First-half tries from Adam McBurney and Ramiro Moyano in addition to two Jaco van der Walt penalties put Edinburgh in control heading into the final 20 minutes.

But scores from Kyle Rowe and Oli Hoskins kept Irish in touch, and despite Agustin Creevy’s red card, Cracknell dotted down to give Jackson the chance to kick for the win, which he duly took.

Eventual finalists showcase credentials

RC Toulon and Lyon, who would go on to reach the final in Marseille, both demonstrated their attacking prowess in convincing away wins.

14 points from Anthony Belleau and tries from Cornell du Preez, Facundo Isa, Gabin Villière and Beka Gigashvili saw Toulon conquer Worcester Warriors 34-23.

Meanwhile, Lyon ran in scores through Romain Taofifenua, Baptiste Couilloud, Davit Niniashvili, Clement Laporte and Yanis Charcosset as they saw off USAP 37-6.
