The highest scoring match was in Scotland, where Glasgow Warriors stormed past Dragons RFC 73-33, with Johnny Matthew scoring five tries - four of which came in the first half - as they continued on their path to the final at the Aviva Stadium.

The other future finalists, RC Toulon, were engaged in a closer affair as they out-fought South African side Toyota Cheetahs 36-21.

Scarlets fared better than their fellow Welsh region Dragons, defeating CA Brive 19-7 at the Parc y Scarlets.

Meanwhile, Bristol Bears fell victim to one of the newcomers, with ASM Clermont Auvergne knocking them out in a 33-26 win at Ashton Gate. Stade Francais Paris suffered a similar fate, with defending champions Lyon returning to the competition with a 41-24 away win.

Emirates Lions had no such issues, defeating Racing 92 51-38 in South Africa. Cardiff Rugby also toppled a Heineken Champions Cup club in Sale Sharks, winning a tight game 28-27 with fly-half Jarrod Evans slotting a late penalty.

Finally, Benetton Rugby proved too much for Irish province Connacht Rugby as they won 41-19 at the Stadio Comunale di Monigo. The Italians crossed six times, with two apiece for Marcus Watson Edouardo Padavoni.
