The Warriors lie second in the pool, 10 points behind winners Exeter Chiefs, after the teams’ dramatic 31-31 draw at Scotstoun in Round 5 at the weekend and Rennie admitted a last-eight spot was "unlikely now".

"We'd need a couple of results to go our way,” he told the Exeter website. “Gloucester play Toulouse away, so there might be a bit of hope there. We'll reassess and go down to Sale and throw everything at it.”

The New Zealander, who takes charge of the Australian national side later this year, is approaching what could be his final Heineken Champions Cup game with Glasgow in a positive mood.

“We are rapt with the attitude,” he told the Warriors’ website after Saturday’s match. “We showed plenty of courage and heart out there, but obviously a draw is a disappointing result for us.

“They are an extremely strong side and they hit us around the fringes. We needed to defend better there.

“I thought we played well and created a lot of opportunities. We just needed the ball to sit up - four tries were left out there if the ball had sat up. That would have made a big difference.”
