Scarlets 15 RC Toulon 27 - 2020

RC Toulon came from behind to beat Scarlets 27-15 and progress from Pool 2 into the quarter-finals of the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

The hosts started well, with a try in the first minute from Gareth Davies, and Leigh Halfpenny making amends for missing the conversion by adding a penalty nine minutes later.

After that, though, Toulon looked like they would be the only side to trouble the scoreboard, with first-half tries from Anthony Etrillard, Masivesi Dakuwaqa, Julian Savea and Bastien Soury. Anthony Belleau added two conversions and a second-half penalty.

Scarlets piled on the pressure in the closing stages, and their effort was rewarded with a 73rd-minute try from Steff Evans, converted by Halfpenny.

Anthony Belleau was RC Toulon’s hero as he kicked a last-gasp conversion to leave Scarlets with only a losing bonus point to show from a thrilling European Rugby Challenge Cup tie between Pool 2’s leading teams.

Despite being reduced to 14 men on the stroke of half-time after a red card for lock Tevita Ratuva, the Welsh region led 16-10 going into the dying seconds following a superb second-half display, which brought penalties for Ryan Lamb and Dan Jones, who also dropped a goal.

However, the pressure of being a man light finally told in the eighth minute of stoppage time, when Toulon’s backs and forwards combined to maul their way over the line 10 metres in from touch.

Sébastien Taofifénua was eventually credited with the try and up stepped centre Belleau to land the ultimate pressure kick, albeit with the help of a post.

Scarlets 30 RC Toulon 27 - 2018

Scarlets topped Champions Cup Pool 5 after a thrilling 30-27 win over Toulon in front of a record Parc y Scarlets European crowd of 14,476.

The first half was incident-packed with Scarlets starting strongly and scoring after two minutes when Rhys Patchell set up Tom Prydie for a try but Toulon responded with Duane Vermuelen driving over after a lineout.

Dan Jones and Anthony Belleau exchanged penalties but Chris Ashton then intercepted a Patchell pass to sprint 70 metres and scored for the visitors.

Penalties were again exchanged by Jones and Belleau before Dan Jones scored a converted try from a lineout. There was still time for Belleau to kick three more points and miss a further penalty before half time, when Scarlets led 27-21.

The second half was more cagey, with a Patchell penalty for Scarlets and two by Francois Trinh-Duc, but Toulon could not quite reel Scarlets back in, with a long-range Trinh-Duc penalty sailing wide at the death.

RC Toulon 21 Scarlets 20 - 2017

A stirring Scarlets comeback from 18-0 down proved in vain as Toulon eked out victory in their opening match in Champions Cup Pool 5.

Toulon got off to a flyer, going 15-0 up after after a quarter of an hour, Eric Escande intercepting an Aled Davies pass to run in, then Guilhelm Guirado adding another after a Anthony Belleau penalty.

It was then 18-0 after another Belleau penalty but a Leigh Halfpenny penalty gave the Welsh side a glimmer of hope by half time before Scarlets got back within a point after Johnny McNicholl crossed and then Halfpenny – back at his old club – scored after some slick interplay, then converted to bring it back to 18-17.

Halfpenny completed the comeback with a further penalty, but Francois Trinh-Duc did likewise to restore the hosts' slender one-point lead. They held on to it, surviving by virtue of a missed Halfpenny penalty late on.

RC Toulon and Scarlets have faced off several times in recent years and will meet again in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals, clashing for the third time this season. We have taken a look back at some of the more memorable matches between the two sides.
