The two French sides went head-to-head at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir in the final eight of Europe’s elite competition, with Toulon looking to add to their astonishing three-season reign as champions.

It was Racing who took an early lead though thanks to a Dan Carter penalty and a Juan Imhoff score, but it took Toulon just over five minutes to respond through a Charles Ollivon try.

Racing’s Maxime Machenaud and Toulon’s Jonathan Pelissie exchanged penalties in the 20 minutes after half-time, leaving the score locked at 16-16 in a game that seemed destined for extra-time.

But Machenaud, who took over the goal-kicking duties from the injured Carter, would have the final say as he stepped up to calmly slot a 79th minute penalty and send Racing into the semi-finals.

Racing would go on to win their final-four encounter by the same score line, leaving it late once again to edge out Leicester Tigers, before a 21-9 defeat to Saracens in the final ended their hopes of lifting the trophy for the first time.

Sunday’s game kicks-off at 20:05 at the La Defense Arena, with Racing hoping for a repeat of their 2016 triumph to stay in touch with the leaders of the Top 14.
