Penaud crossed in the third and 58th minutes as all of France’s points came from players whose clubs will feature in next season’s Heineken Champions Cup.

Hosts Japan reached half-time level at 13-13 in sweltering conditions, but France went through the gears in the second period.

Stade Toulousain full back Melvyn Jaminet converted Penaud’s opening try and added two first-half penalties.

No. 8 Tevita Tatafu barged over for Japan, with fly half Seung-Sin converting and adding two penalties.

Toulouse wing Matthis Lebel bagged France’s second try on 43 minutes, with Jaminet converting and the visitors kicked on from there.

Union Bordeaux-Bègles centre Yoram Moefana and Stade Rochelais hooker Pierre Bourgarit, who was on as a replacement, completed France’s try tally. Jaminet converted both and added a further penalty.

Lee punctuated the scoring with his second penalty before converting a late consolation try from wing Siosaia Fifita.

Munster Rugby’s Keith Earls early try proved a rare highlight for an Ireland side packed with Heineken Champions Cup players as they lost 42-19 to New Zealand at Eden Park, Auckland.

Wing Earls gave Ireland the lead on five minutes and his side competed well for the first quarter.

However, the All Blacks then responded with fourth converted tries before half-time, while Ireland lost captain and Leinster Rugby fly half Johnny Sexton with a head injury that is likely to rule him out of the Second Test.

Full back Jordie Barrett, wing Sevu Reece, centre Quinn Tupaea and No. 8 Ardea Savea did the damage, with Barrett converting each try.

Leinster centre Gary Ringrose crossed shortly after the break, with replacement fly half Joey Carbery, of Munster, converting.

Any hopes of a comeback, however, were quashed as Savea went over for his second and replacement Pita Gus Sowakula bagged New Zealand’s sixth, Barrett converting both.

Ireland did at least manage a late consolation try through replacement Bundee Aki, of EPCR Challenge Cup side Connacht Rugby, converted by Carbery.
