The former Leinster Rugby centre highlighted the experienced core of La Rochelle players that have featured in games of such scale in the past.

He also said that their semi-final performance against his former team will give them a confidence boost ahead of the final at Twickenham Stadium.

“[There’s] lots of experience and success littered throughout the team,” he pointed out on Off the Ball’s podcast. “Guys that have played on the big stage before, played in European finals, been on the losing team.

“The likes of Brice Dulin has been there, obviously [Will] Skelton with Saracens. There’s not going to be any shortage of confidence on the big occasion.

“They’ve managed to deliver it on the semi-final level against the hotly-tipped favourites of the tournament in Leinster.

“And they put them to the sword for certain parts of the game and showed a physical dominance that we weren’t anticipating. So, there’s nothing they should be fearful of with this Toulouse team.”

O’Driscoll was however full of praise for a Toulouse side that is brimming with world class talent, citing their dynamism as one of their key assets.

“What I would say about Toulouse is that they can play the game lots of different ways,” he explained. “You look at the grunt that they possess up front with the Arnold brothers and that front row.

“But then you’ve got these magicians at half-back, particularly in [Antoine] Dupont and [Romain] Ntamack, pulling the strings for their X-factor out wide in [Matthis] Lebel and [Cheslin] Kolbe.

“They can really graft up front but they play a lot of ‘KBA’ themselves – keeping the ball alive. They can be pragmatic and kick to the corners when necessary, but they also have beautiful sleight of hand.

“I think they’re probably the most complete team across Europe in the manner in which they can play conditions – raining, warm, freezing cold.

“They are a massive, massive threat and, rightly so, I think they are just favourites because of what they’ve done previously.”

La Rochelle head coach Ronan O’Gara took over at the club in 2019, but the team has already made significant progress during his reign, culminating in the run that has seen them reach this season’s Heineken Champions Cup final.

O’Driscoll believes that La Rochelle’s campaign has probably exceeded his former Ireland teammate's expectations, given the side’s performances domestically as well as in Europe.

“It’s quite the start to his coaching career,” he said. “It's still very much in its infancy and what he’s capable of achieving.

“I’m sure he would’ve had aspirations to get to the knockout stages of Europe, but would he have thought at the start of the year that they were going to be European finalists?

“Sitting second in the TOP 14, right behind the [other] finalists in Toulouse. Its turning out, currently, to be a really great season for him.

“But when you get to the business end you come up against the best of oppositions and they’re going to have to really turn it on again like they did against Leinster if they’re going to manage to contain this Toulouse team.”

Three-time European champion Brian O’Driscoll says that La Rochelle should have nothing to fear when they take on Toulouse in the Heineken Champions Cup final tomorrow – but warned of the threat the four-time winners pose.
