2015 Challenge Cup final: Edinburgh Rugby 13 Gloucester Rugby 19

Gloucester Rugby lifted the Challenge Cup for the second time in 2015 as they clung on with 14 men for victory over Edinburgh Rugby at Twickenham Stoop.

Gloucester’s Billy Meakes was sent off for a late and high tackle on Sam Beard with 17 minutes to play, and Edinburgh threatened – but ultimately failed - to overturn a 13-point deficit.

An early Sam Hidalgo-Clyne penalty put Edinburgh in front, but Gloucester drew level through Greig Laidlaw on eight minutes before taking command of the contest.

Billy Twelvetrees finished for the game’s opening try on 10 minutes, streaking over after a break from the electric Jonny May.

Laidlaw converted to move Gloucester seven points clear, and Edinburgh looked to be in further trouble when Anton Bresler was sin-binned for a cynical infringement as the Scottish region came under immense pressure.

But there would be no score during the 10-minute period, and Hidalgo-Clyne struck a second penalty as Bresler returned to reduce the gap to four points.

However, there was an almost immediate response from Laidlaw from the tee, and Hidalgo-Clyne was off target with a last-gasp effort at the end of the first half to leave the scores at 13-6.

Two more Laidlaw penalties in the opening quarter of an hour in the second half saw Gloucester edge towards the title, but they endured a disastrous eight-minute spell as Ross Moriarty was yellow-carded before Meakes was shown red.

Ross Ford drove over two minutes later and Hidalgo-Clyne converted to drastically change the complexion of the game and leaving Edinburgh six points adrift with a quarter of an hour left.

But Gloucester would hold firm in a terrific defensive effort, ending a nine-year wait for a second EPCR title.
