The former Scotland scrum-half also highlights his European battles with Brive, red wine in Bordeaux, and trying to fill the Heineken Cup with milkshake!

Speaking about that 1998 success in the Heineken Cup final, Nicol said: “It hit home to me a number of years later. I was with my two daughters in Edinburgh and two couples were walking towards me.

“They stopped me and in a West Country droll said ‘we were there, thank you’. My eldest daughter asked what it meant and I just knew the two couples were Bath Rugby fans and they were in Bordeaux that weekend and it was probably 15 years on.

“I think when you get moments like that and people talk about what they were doing that weekend, you realise just how special it was so without doubt, that was the greatest achievement of my career.”
