2002: Leicester Tigers 29 Leinster Rugby 18

Leicester staged a superb comeback in the second quarter to stay on course for a first Heineken Cup by easing into the semi-finals at Welford Road.

Leinster marched 10-0 ahead with a controversial Denis Hickie try and two Nathan Spooner kicks, before Leicester rallied with four tries to open up a 24-11 lead at the interval and never looked back despite a second-half fightback from the visitors.

Leinster were ahead as early as the third minute via a Spooner penalty and stretched that advantage when Hickie was adjudged to have touched down ahead of Leicester's Austin Healey following a kick ahead. Spooner converted.

Then came the comeback, with Leicester opening their account in the 23rd minute when Neil Back touched down after a drive following a line-out.

Leicester drew level five minutes later, with Healey's lovely pass releasing Leon Lloyd for a superb try, and nudged 17-10 ahead when Healey turned scorer by scooting through the Leinster defence to cross close enough to the posts for Geordan Murphy's first conversion.

Murphy then capitalised on a four-man overlap to notch Leicester’s fourth try and he again added the two-pointer to extend their lead to 24-10.

Spooner reduced the arrears via a penalty with the last kick of the first half, but Back chalked up his second try of the afternoon in the 50th minute from another drive.

The Irish side rallied with a try in the 57th minute via Ben Willis, but that completed the scoring.

2005: Leinster Rugby 13 Leicester Tigers 29

Leicester sealed a Heineken Cup semi-final with Stade Toulousain after becoming the first English side to win a quarter-final away from home, at a packed Lansdowne Road.

A try apiece from Ollie Smith and Daryl Gibson allied to 19 points from Andy Goode saw off the Irish side, who could only manage two David Holwell penalties and a late Shane Horgan try.

Leicester dominated from the start, although it took them until the 12th minute to take the lead via a Goode penalty, which was cancelled out eight minutes later by Holwell.

Leinster continued to keep Leicester out - apart from Goode’s penalty in the 33rd minute - until the 38th, when Smith dummied Felipe Contepomi on the right to sprint over.

Goode converted and kicked his third penalty right on half-time after he was late-tackled by Ciaran Potts, who was sin-binned.

Holwell again cut the deficit with a penalty in the 56th minute, but straight from the restart, Lewis Moody grabbed the ball and released Gibson, who raced to the line for a try that Goode converted.

The Tigers fly-half dropped a brilliant goal with 10 minutes remaining before Horgan powered over for a try by the posts, which Holwell converted.

2011: Leinster Rugby 17 Leicester Tigers 10

Leinster avenged their two previous Heineken Cup quarter-final defeats at Leicester’s hands by qualifying for a semi-final against Toulouse at the Aviva Stadium.

Three Jonathan Sexton penalties gave Leinster 9-3 half-time lead, with Toby Flood replying for Tigers, before Isa Nacewa crossed for the decisive Leinster try, Rob Hawkins' 77th-minute effort for Leicester coming too late.

Sexton kicked an early penalty, only for Flood to level for Leicester straight from the restart. However, Sexton added two more penalties after 16 and 37 minutes to put Leinster six points ahead at the break.

Alesana Tuilagi was denied the game's opening try in the 43rd minute, when the television match official ruled that Sean O'Brien's tackle had pushed the Leicester wing into touch at the corner flag, and Leinster capitalised four minutes later.

Nacewa collected Ben Youngs' poor kick near the half-way line and after exchanging passes with Shane Horgan, the Leinster full-back jinked past three attempted tackles before touching down.

Sexton stretched Leinster's lead in the 75th minute with his fourth penalty of the evening, which provided sufficient cushion when replacement Hawkins powered over for a try converted by Flood.

Leicester Tigers and Leinster Rugby will meet for a fourth time in the Heineken Champions Cup quarter-finals on May 7, with Leicester currently ahead 2-1. Here we reflect on their three previous meetings at this stage of the prestigious competition.
