However, replacement Herring sealed Ireland’s first ever series win in New Zealand with a 65th minute try, converted by Sexton, as the visitors finished the stronger and remained composed to record a memorable victory following their first ever Test win in New Zealand last week.

Tries from Heineken Champions Cup stars Freddie Steward and Marcus Smith helped England beat Australia 21-17 in Sydney to clinch the series 2-1.

Leicester Tigers full back Steward and Harlequins fly half Smith went over either side of half-time as England fought back from 10-3 down and then held on for victory.

England led 11-10 at half-time, despite Australia having the better of the opening period.

Centre Owen Farrell, whose Saracens side will be back in the Heineken Champions Cup next season, opened the scoring with a penalty, but Australia were the more creative side.

They were rewarded with a try from Tom Wright, with Noah Lolesio converting and adding a penalty.

Australia could not take their other chances and England punished them with a second Farrell penalty and Steward’s try.

A strong start to the second half saw Farrell kick a penalty and convert Smith’s try.

Replacement Folau Fainga'a’s try, converted by Lolesio, gave Australia hope, but England defended well to hold on for victory.
