Glasgow Warriors 31-31 Exeter Chiefs

Glasgow and Exeter were paired together in Pool 2 of the 2019/20 Pool Stage alongside Stade Rochelais and Sale Sharks in a fiercely competitive group.

The Gallagher Premiership side entered the Round 5 contest with four wins from four – including a 34-18 win over Glasgow at Sandy Park – while the Scottish outfit needed a victory to maintain their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

Wing Tommy Seymour opened the scoring for the PRO14 outfit within in 56 seconds of the kick-off – he lofted a kick down the right flank, running onto his own kick to touch down for the opener.

After a Chiefs penalty, Glasgow added their second try in the opening seven minutes. Outside centre Huw Jones punctuating a swinging Warriors move, feigning an offload to Seymour before powering through two tacklers for the score.

The Scottish side were pressing for further points when an errant pass hit the floor on 12 minutes, Exeter scrum-half Nic White picking up the loose ball before racing the length of the field to reduce the deficit to 14-10.

A Glasgow penalty extended the lead to seven before Chiefs’ No.8 Matt Kvesic powered over from close range with 28 minutes played to level proceedings. An almost identical close-range finish from flanker Jacques Vermeulen seven minutes later gave the Gallagher Premiership side their first lead of the contest.

There was still time before the break for Glasgow to respond, fly-half Adam Hastings’ dummied pass opened a lane for the Scotland international who accelerated through the gap in the defence before offloading to scrum-half George Horne who finished off the move, 24-24 the score at the break.

Exeter re-took the lead early in the second period with another show of strength in the pack, Kvesic getting his second of the afternoon under the posts.

Glasgow responded just after the hour mark with a rolling maul down the right flank, replacement Nikola Matawalu awarded the try in the corner.

In added time, former Glasgow Warrior turned Exeter Chief Stuart Hogg had the opportunity to kick a 60m penalty for victory, his effort pinging off the crossbar and back into play as both sides had to make do with a 31-31 draw.
