Quins came out victorious in a 42-33 win at the Madejski Stadium, but not until the two sides had played out a dramatic extra time period, something Wood described as “horrible”.

“I had been injured for six weeks but was brought back in to play in the final so I started at hooker and I would’ve been in good nick but I wasn’t match sharp," said the former Ireland international.

“That game ended in a draw and I was absolutely shattered having played 80 minutes. Most hookers now only play 55 or so minutes. So that was 80 in the final and then it went to 30 minutes of extra time.

“And in the first minute of extra time, David Wilson, our Australian No.7 who was a phenomenal player, tore his cruciate ligament in his knee and I went to openside for the last half hour.

“So I don’t even know if I enjoyed that game. It was horrible!”

The 48-year-old - who hosts the Heineken Champions Cup Rewind - also admitted the reason he isn't in many of the post-match pictures is because he was too tired to come out of the changing room.

“But when the final whistle went, I brushed past my wife because I didn’t recognise her and I just had to get into the changing room and sit down because I was on the verge of collapse," he added.

“So I don’t appear in an awful lot of photos, the only one is lifting the trophy with Will Greenwood because it had taken me that long to get out of the changing room.”

Former Harlequins hooker Keith Wood admitted he was “absolutely knackered” towards the end of the 2001 Challenge Cup final between Harlequins and Narbonne, having returned from injury to play in the showpiece final.
