The 1999 final took place at Lansdowne Road in Dublin, with Ulster having the lion share of support on the day, something Humphreys believes helped his side to the eventual 21-6 success and secure a first European crown.

“We were definitely shocked by how many supporters were there," said the 48-year-0ld. "It was one of the highlights of the day. It was fantastic. It just felt like the whole of the country had become Ulster supporters and were right in behind us.

“I remember because of that connection we had developed with our supporters and because of the way the interest was there, and people had got in behind us, we went across and stood in front of them and acknowledged the support before the game.

"For me that was one of those moments in sport that during my career, made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. It was one of those goosebump moments that again meant more than anything else.

"That’s when we felt at that point we were going to win the game. It was one of the most hostile atmospheres. If you weren’t an Ulster fella then it was a pretty intimidating place to be.

"We were against some big French players and they didn’t really fire a shot and it was a pretty comfortable win in the end.”
