2002: Montferrand 20 Leinster Lions 23

A late try from Denis Hickie, converted by Brian O’Meara, gave Leinster a superb win over Montferrand – as ASM Clermont Auvergne were known then – in Clermont-Ferrand in the first Heineken Cup meeting between the pair.

Leinster trailed 20-16 in the latter stages, but then the Irish province stirred themselves for one final effort and it paid off when Hickie crossed.

O’Meara converted the try to stretch their advantage to three points and Leinster hung on to register their first victory on French soil against a club who had never been beaten before at home in the Heineken Cup.

2010: Leinster Rugby 29 ASM Clermont Auvergne 28

Leinster withstood a fine fightback by Clermont in Dublin to squeeze into the semi-finals and keep alive their hopes of successive Heineken Cups.

A Julien Malzieu try helped the French club into a 10-0 lead, but two Jamie Heaslip scores converted by Johnny Sexton, who also kicked two penalties, saw Leinster surge into a 20-10 interval advantage.

Malzieu completed his hat-trick after the break with two further tries to restore Clermont’s lead, only for Sexton to take his match tally to 19 points with two more penalties and clinch victory, Brock James missing a late drop-goal to win it for Clermont.

2010: ASM Clermont Auvergne 20 Leinster Rugby 13

Clermont avenged their narrow Heineken Cup quarter-final loss to Leinster earlier in the year by registering their first victory over the Irish province at the fourth attempt.

The French club dominated the second half of this Pool 2 clash, restricting Leinster to a Johnny Sexton penalty while they scored a try via Anthony Floch, which was converted by Morgan Parra, who also kicked a penalty.

The sides had been deadlocked at 10-10 at the break, with Shane Horgan’s converted try being cancelled out by Julien Malzieu’s goaled score. Sexton and Parra also exchanged penalties.

2012: ASM Clermont Auvergne 15 Leinster Rugby 19

Leinster became only the third British or Irish team to win a Heineken Cup semi-final in France as they stayed on course for an historic third triumph in four years by staging a superb second-half rally to edge out Clermont in Bordeaux.

Brock James, who scored all the French club’s points, landed four penalties to two by Johnny Sexton to give Clermont a 12-6 half-time lead.

However, Cian Healy's converted try and Rob Kearney's drop-goal early in the second half put Leinster in front, before James' penalty made it 15-16. Sexton sealed Leinster’s win with his third penalty, Clermont’s Wesley Fofana having a try disallowed when he lost control of the ball over the line.

2012: ASM Clermont Auvergne 15 Leinster Rugby 12

Clermont avenged their Heineken Cup semi-final loss to Leinster earlier in the year by halting the Irish province’s unbeaten 17-match run in the competition in a try-less Pool 5 fixture in France.

Morgan Parra kicked four penalties for Clermont and Brock James added a drop-goal in the first half as the French side stretched their sequence of home victories to 51.

The French side were rendered scoreless in the second half, but Leinster, who trailed 15-9 at the break, could manage only three points via Sexton’s fourth penalty and so succumbed to their first defeat in the competition since Clermont beat them in December 2010.

2012: Leinster Rugby 21 ASM Clermont Auvergne 28

Morgan Parra gave a magnificent goalkicking performance to secure Clermont’s first away win over Leinster and complete a famous Heineken Cup Pool 5 double over the Irish province in Dublin.

The France scrum-half kicked seven penalties and converted Wesley Fofana’s first-half try as Leinster suffered their first home defeat in the competition since October 2009.

Trailing 25-9 at one stage, the defending champions claimed a losing bonus point after late tries from Shane Jennings and Fergus McFadden, with Jennings’ being converted by Johnny Sexton, who also landed three penalties.
