What did Munster need to do to reach the quarter-finals?

Munster faced a mammoth task as they looked set to be denied a slot in the last eight on points difference, requiring a 27–point swing and at least four tries to snatch a spot in the quarter-finals from Gloucester Rugby who were progressing well in the English Premiership.

Perpignan clinched their spot as Pool 2 winners with a narrow 39-35 win over Viadana. The French side then saw off Llanelli and Leinster on the road to secure a spot in the final, but were beaten 22-17 by Toulouse in Dublin.

Gloucester had won four of their five European Cup matches this season, including a 64-16 win over Viadana in Round 5.

Munster on the other hand had already been beaten on the road by Perpignan and Gloucester and only narrowly kept their qualification hopes alive with a 25-22 win over Viadana in Round 4.
