With three weekends remaining to reveal the Kings of Europe in the tournament’s 25th season, BT Sport cameras will be in place on Saturday for a mouth-watering contest between recently-crowned Guinness PRO14 winners, Leinster Rugby, and Heineken Champions Cup holders, Saracens, who clash in a repeat of the 2019 final.

This Aviva Stadium meeting will be the clubs’ fifth head-to-head in the top flight with Leinster’s previous 100% record in the fixture dented by Sarries’ success at St James’ Park last season which took the north London outfit to within one of Leinster’s joint-best tally of four titles.

Jackson Wray will make his 250th appearance for Saracens if selected and that isn’t the only landmark on the horizon this weekend. Exeter Chiefs’ Ian Whitten and Northampton Saints’ Courtney Lawes are both set to receive their caps for 50 appearances in Europe’s premier club tournament if they feature when the Gallagher Premiership rivals come face-to-face at Sandy Park.

Sunday evening’s fixture will be the first in the tournament’s knockout stage history at the Devon venue with Exeter’s only previous quarter-final coming in 2016 when Jimmy Gopperth’s dramatic, last-gasp conversion earned Wasps victory at the Ricoh Arena.

The other domestic battle in the last eight pits ASM Clermont Auvergne against Racing 92 at Stade Marcel-Michelin, the second time in three years that the two have met at this stage. Since Leone Nakarawa inspired Racing to victory that day en route to the 2018 final, Clermont have been faultless in front of their own fans in Europe with eight consecutive wins.

That is the only Heineken Champions Cup quarter-final in which both clubs are looking to add their names to the tournament’s Roll of Honour for the first time. Of the 13 European Cups shared between the quarter-finalists, five are held between Toulouse and Ulster Rugby, who meet on Sunday at Stade Ernest-Wallon, live and free-to-air for audiences in the United Kingdom and Ireland on Channel 4 and Virgin Media in addition to the comprehensive BT Sport coverage. Ulster lead the head-to-heads between the clubs 5-3 including a quarter-final win in Belfast en route to lifting the trophy in 1999.

Whilst enjoying the stars on the pitch, EPCR will be acknowledging the dedication of the communities outside of the stadia whose key work has been striving to protect society throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. With the message that ‘You are our Stars’, players will lead a moment of applause before kick-off in each match. Furthermore, the standout player in each quarter-final will receive a brand-new Heineken Star of the Match trophy.

There are two former winners of the Heineken Champions Cup in the running for this season’s European Rugby Challenge Cup. All matches in the tournament from this point onwards will be broadcast live in the United Kingdom and Ireland on BT Sport and fans can look forward to the following highlights.

Three-time European champions, RC Toulon, and Scarlets have been familiar foes recently as their Stade Félix Mayol tie on Saturday evening (20.15 UK and Irish time) is a fifth meeting in three seasons. Toulon won all six of their pool stage matches to earn the number one ranking, including home-and-away victories over their west Wales opponents whose fans will also have access to Welsh-language coverage courtesy of S4C.

Twice European champions, Leicester Tigers, host Castres Olympique at Welford Road with both sides eyeing a route to next season’s expanded Heineken Champions Cup. Castres were classified outside of the TOP 14’s leading eight places when the 2019/20 season was abandoned in France, so they can only qualify for the Heineken Champions Cup by lifting the trophy next month. Leicester cannot mathematically make the top eight in the current Premiership campaign, so they too have an added incentive.

Bordeaux-Bègles edged out Edinburgh Rugby at the top of Pool 3 to set up a repeat meeting at Stade Chaban-Delmas (Saturday, 12.30 UK and Irish time) and were the leading scorers of both tries (28) and points (221). The visitors have been eliminated from Europe at the last-eight stage in each of the last three seasons (twice in the Challenge Cup, once in the Heineken Champions Cup) but will be hoping that a change of scenery does them good here with all of those defeats coming at BT Murrayfield.

The winners of that tie will play either Bristol Bears or Dragons in the semi-final, with the Newport-based outfit making the short trip to Ashton Gate Stadium tomorrow evening (19.45 UK and Irish time). Dragons have qualified for the quarter-finals for the first time since 2016 and both clubs go into the fixture with eyes fixed firmly on silverware having already booked their places in next season’s Heineken Champions Cup.
