Following the conclusion of Round 4 this weekend, the Round of 16 fixtures were confirmed and they are eight mouth-watering match-ups.

The six top sides from each pool progressed to the knockout stage with four relegated Heineken Champions Cup teams – Lyon, Racing 92, ASM Clermont Auvergne and Sale Sharks – completing the Round of 16.

In a dramatic finish, Toyota Cheetahs ensured both debuting South African sides would progress from Pool B as Siya Masuku’s last-gasp penalty earned them a 9-6 win over Section Paloise.

That secured sixth at the expense of Pau and set up a Round of 16 trip to Pool A toppers RC Toulon, who made it four wins from four with a 14-5 home success over Zebre Parma.

Emirates Lions, the other South African outfit competing in this season’s EPCR Challenge Cup for the first time, took third in Pool B and clinched a home clash with Racing as they triumphed 30-25 at Dragons RFC.

The Welsh region also advanced despite their comeback attempt falling just short in Ystrad Mynach, though they missed out on the top-four and subsequent home advantage in the Round of 16 and will head to Glasgow Warriors.

Glasgow were second in Pool A as they were held to a 19-19 draw in an entertaining clash with Bath Rugby at Scotstoun Stadium.

That result moved Bath up to sixth momentarily, but CA Brive stunned Cardiff Rugby 37-24 to snatch the final qualification place and secure an away game at Scarlets.

Scarlets and Cardiff enjoyed strong pool stage campaigns, with the former topping Pool B as their 20-7 triumph at Aviron Bayonnais made it four wins from four, while the latter’s three victories prior to their loss at Brive earned them third in Pool A and a home encounter with Sale.

Benetton Rugby claimed second in Pool B as they ran out 35-32 winners in a thrilling battle with Stade Français Paris in Treviso, booking a home game against Connacht Rugby.

Connacht finished fifth in Pool A and missed out on home advantage as they were beaten 35-21 at Newcastle Falcons despite Finlay Bealham’s hat-trick of tries, while Stade Français’ fourth place in Pool B sees them host Lyon.

Newcastle’s success against Connacht was their only win of the pool stage, and it wasn’t enough to see them progress as they finished seventh – one point adrift of Brive.

Bristol Bears ended up fourth in Pool A and secured a home tie against Clermont as they cruised to a 33-19 win over USAP at Ashton Gate.

Newcastle, Bath, USAP, Zebre, Pau and Bayonne all drop out of EPCR competitions after failing to make the top-six in the two pools.

There was an enthralling end to the EPCR Challenge Cup pool stage as knockout stage qualification went down to the wire for several teams.
