Saracens went down 25-16 at Stade Félix Mayol as Toulon set up a final clash with fellow TOP 14 side Lyon.

The visitors trailed just 15-13 at the break, but could only manage a further penalty from Farrell in the second half.

The England international told BT Sport: “One thing I can’t fault is people’s effort. People's effort leading into the game and people’s effort tonight, I don’t think we will ever question that.”

While Saracens were frustrated with their own display, Farrell praised Toulon’s efforts in nullifying them.

He said: “We couldn’t string too much together today. That's a massive credit to Toulon, not just in the way that they defended, but how they slowed our breakdown down in particular.

“It was hard to play against them. We need to make sure that we figure out why that happened consistently throughout the game and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“We are obviously disappointed with the result, but probably more with the performance, especially that first half.

“We feel like we could have given a better account of ourselves, especially in some areas we pride ourselves in.

“We will have to look inwards now and make sure it spurs us on for the rest of the season.”

Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall added: "It didn't feel like we dealt with the occasion all that well. It was our first time back in an occasion like this.

"We need to see what we can learn from it. I'm not sure who did or who didn't (play well) but it doesn't take many for your team to be off.”

Owen Farrell insisted that Saracens' EPCR Challenge Cup semi-final defeat against RC Toulon was not due to a lack of commitment.
