Today we choose five ‘flyers’ who could light up the Challenge Cup next season - and it’s a multi-national collection, from England, New Zealand and Argentina. Pool 1: Tom Howe (Worcester Warriors) The 24-year-old burst onto the European rugby scene in 2017/18 with three tries in five Challenge Cup appearances and built on that superb form last season with five in six games as Worcester reached the quarter-finals of the competition. The England Under-20 international should continue proving a handful for defences in Pool 1 next season with his powerful running. Pool 2: Nehe Milner-Skudder (RC Toulon) The 2015 Rugby World Cup winner is hoping that a change in scenery – from New Zealand to France – will resurrect his career, which has rather stalled due to injury since notching eight tries in as many Tests that year. The inaugural World Rugby Breakout Player of the Year, who finished with 12 tries in 13 Tests for the All Blacks, could be a lethal acquisition if it does. Pool 3: Santiago Cordero (Bordeaux-Bègles) In an era of giant wings, the diminutive Argentina international is a throwback to a time when the occupants of the No. 14 and 11 jerseys were fleet-footed sidesteppers. The 25-year-old dazzled in his first Heineken Champions Cup campaign for Exeter Chiefs last season, beating 38 defenders in six matches to finish second in the list, even though the English club failed to qualify for the knockout stage. He should therefore set Pool 3 alight next term. Pool 4: Tom Pincus (Bristol Bears) Bristol may have bowed out of the Challenge Cup in the quarter-finals last season, but Pincus enjoyed an outstanding maiden European campaign with six tries in seven games. The 27-year-old also featured in the top 10 for breaks (18), metres made (533) and carries (68), finishing second, third and joint seventh respectively in those tables, so the Bears will be hoping for more of the same next season. Pool 5: Ben Smith (Pau) The New Zealander has been a prolific try-scorer in the Test arena, notching 33 in 78 games, and there is no reason to believe he will let up when he swaps his All Black jersey for a Pau one after the World Cup. The 33-year-old can play full-back, wing or centre, but he is expected to feature on the wing for the French club and will be a real threat to Pool 5 defences.
