Today it’s the Challenge Cup’s turn for our new series, where we pick out five players to watch per position for each pool next season. This week it’s full-back and there’s a mixture of youth and experience among the five. Pool 1: Jordan Williams (Dragons) Although Dragons only finished third in Pool 1 of the Challenge Cup last season, one of their bright spots was the form of Williams, who scored two tries in his six appearances. The 25-year-old, who can also play on the wing, sparkled with his speed and elusive runs – qualities which have earned him Under-20 and senior Wales honours. Pool 2: Hugo Bonneval (RC Toulon) Bonneval is already a Challenge Cup winner, having lifted the trophy with Stade Français Paris in 2017, and had an impressive record with them in the competition before switching to Toulon in 2017, scoring nine tries in 20 games. Toulon will hope that the skilful 28-year-old former France No.15 can copy that form for them now that they have dropped into the Challenge Cup. Pool 3: Blair Kinghorn (Edinburgh Rugby) The last time Edinburgh appeared in the Challenge Cup – in 2017/18 - Kinghorn made a big impact, scoring 44 points in five games as the Scottish side reached the quarter-finals. Since then the 22-year-old has notched Scotland’s first Six Nations hat-trick for 20 years, so expect one of Edinburgh’s most exciting backs for a while to stamp his presence on this pool. Pool 4: Charles Piutau (Bristol Bears) The 17-cap All Black’s first season with Bristol was hit by injury, so that he never played for the Bears in their march towards last season’s quarter-finals. However, providing the 27-year-old – who can also play on the wing or at centre – is fully fit, he will surely catch the eye next term, having chalked up eight tries in 19 Champions Cup games for Ulster Rugby and Wasps before his move to Ashton Gate. Pool 5: Hallam Amos (Cardiff Blues) Amos can play across the back three, but the 24-year-old has been listed as a No.15 by his new club, whom he joined in the summer after a decade at the Dragons, where he won 19 caps for Wales. The talented runner has already shown a liking for the Challenge Cup with an eye-catching tally of 12 tries in 24 appearances in the competition, so expect that to increase.
