European Cup winner Girvan Dempsey has joined forces once again with his former Leinster Rugby skipper Leo Cullen to take over as the backs coach at the Irish province.

Dempsey has been the Leinster Academy Manager since November 2012, guiding them to back-to-back British & Irish Cup wins, but has now been offered a new role at the club up to the end of the 2016/17 season.

Capped 82 times by Ireland, Dempsey played 62 times in the Heineken Cup and helped Leinster to win the title for the first time in 2009 with a win over Leicester Tigers at Murrayfield. He also won two PRO12 titles with in a domestic career that saw him play 175 games in blue.

Dempsey takes over from Richie Murphy, who has taken up a full time post with the IRFU, and has been acting as interim backs coach this season.

"The quality of backs at our disposal is well known. Many of them are doing a great job at the World Cup with the Irish team and I look forward to working with them all over the coming seasons,” Dempsey told the Leinster Rugby website. "But I am also hugely energised by the talent that is bubbling away behind the senior set-up and I'm excited to continue the journey that began in the Academy with those lads into the senior side.

"I've really enjoyed the last few months and being involved with the senior team on a daily basis and I'm delighted that Leinster have offered me the role going forward. We have a busy schedule ahead of us and obviously there are challenges with so many of the lads being away at the World Cup.”

Leinster have also confirmed that as part of the coaching and management appointments over the summer months, Guy Easterby has become Head of Rugby Operations. He will now oversee other areas within Leinster Rugby on top of his previous role as Team Manager.
