After last month’s European Rugby Challenge Cup Pool Draw in Lausanne, we take an in-depth look at Pool 2, which includes the 2017 winners Stade Français Paris. Pau Ground: Stade du Hameau, Pau, France. Challenge Cup record: Pau have featured in two Challenge Cup finals, winning in 2000 after a 34-21 victory over Castres Olympique in Toulouse. However, they were beaten 27-3 in the 2005 final by Sale Sharks at Oxford. Last season: Pau topped Pool 3 and reached the quarter-finals as No.1 seed after picking up 29 points from six matches. They defeated fellow French side Stade Français Paris 35-32 in the last eight but were beaten 16-10 by eventual winners Cardiff Blues in the semi-finals. In the TOP 14 they finished eighth. Head coach: Former All-Blacks fly-half Simon Mannix played Super Rugby with Hurricanes before moving to Sale Sharks and later Gloucester Rugby. After hanging up his boots, Mannix was backs coach at Racing 92 and Munster Rugby, before becoming head coach at Pau in 2014. Key players: One of Pau's best-known players is English back-row forward Steffon Armitage. The 32-year-old won the 2014 EPCR European Player of the Year after helping Toulon to a second European Cup success, before moving to Pau in 2016. In the close season Pau signed Australian full-back Jesse Mogg from TOP 14 rivals Montpellier. Challenge Cup record: This will be only Ospreys' second season in the Challenge Cup. Their first was in 2016/17, when they reached the quarter-finals after winning all six Pool games, only to lose 21-25 to eventual winners Stade Français Paris. Last season: The Welsh region were unable to progress from a difficult Champions Cup Pool 2, coming third with 15 points behind 2017 runners-up ASM Clermont Auvergne and 2017 winners Saracens. Ospreys finished fifth in the Guinness PRO14 Conference A. Head coach: Allen Clarke signed a three-year deal in April to become Ospreys’ permanent head coach after being appointed interim head coach following the departure of Steve Tandy in January. Clarke joined the Welsh region at the start of the 2017/18 season as forwards coach from Ulster Rugby. Key players: Ospreys have made a number of eye-catching signings during the off-season, with centre Scott Williams and scrum-half Aled Davies joining from fellow Welsh region Scarlets. Challenge Cup record: Worcester have reached the final twice but lost on both occasions. They went down 23-10 to Auch at Oxford on their first season in the competition in 2004/05 and suffered the same fate three years later at Gloucester, where they were beaten 24-16 by Bath Rugby. Last season: The Warriors came third in Pool 5 behind Connacht Rugby and Brive, and finished 11th in the Aviva Premiership. Director of rugby: Experienced South African coach Alan Solomons took over from the departing Gary Gold as director of rugby at Sixways last December. Solomons previously had a successful spell as head coach at Edinburgh Rugby, helping them become the first Scottish team to play in a European final. Key players: Worcester have signed back-row forward Cornell du Preez from Edinburgh Rugby and former Hurricanes lock Michael Fatialofa. Challenge Cup record: It was third time lucky for the Parisian side when they lifted the Challenge Cup in 2017 with a 25-17 win over Gloucester Rugby at BT Murrayfield, as their two previous final appearances ended in defeat – 18-19 to Harlequins at Cardiff in 2011 and 13-34 to Leinster Rugby in Dublin in 2013. Last season: Stade squeezed into the Challenge Cup quarter-finals as the third-best runners-up after coming second in Pool 4 behind Edinburgh Rugby. They were beaten 35-32 by Pau in a thrilling all-French quarter-final. Their domestic season wasn't quite so memorable, as they came 12th in the TOP 14. Head coach: Former South Africa head coach Heyneke Meyer has taken over the reins at Stade Français, following the departure of former All Black Greg Cooper after one season at Stade Jean-Bouin. Meyer has previously coached in Super Rugby with the Stormers and the Bulls. Key players: Stade Français can boast several France caps, such as locks Yoann Maestri and Paul Gabrillagues, fly-half Jules Plisson, centre Gaël Fickou and wing Djibril Camara.
