This week we take a look back at Gloucester Rugby’s victory over Ulster Rugby in 2007, which featured one of the quickest ever try bonus points in the European Cup. Gloucester wing Lesley Vainikolo opened the scoring in Belfast after putting the finishing touches on a delightful move, with fly-half Ryan Lamb playing a pin-point kick out wide to the former England international. Centre Mike Tindall got on the scoresheet for the second try of the evening before Vainikolo this time supplied Lamb after a powerful run to allow the fly-half enough space to dive over for the third try. Lamb would turn supplier again in the 22nd minute as he intercepted a Paddy Wallace pass, before surging clear and finding wing James Simpson-Daniel who cleared away for the all-important fourth score, giving the Cherry and Whites a try bonus point after 21 minutes and 53 seconds. https://twitter.com/gloucesterrugby/status/1021817565130174464 They hadn’t finished there though, as another turnover in the 28th minute led to full-back Iain Balshaw quickening past Ulster scrum-half Isaac Boss for the fifth try of a thrilling opening half-hour. The Irish province hit back with two tries at the end of the first half through Wallace and lock Matt McCullough to leave Gloucester 29-14 ahead at the interval. Remarkably, only three points were scored in the second half with Lamb slotting over a sole penalty kick as Gloucester eased to a 32-14 victory in Belfast. Ulster would go on to finish at the foot of Pool 2, while Gloucester topped the Pool with 24 points from six matches, ahead of Ospreys who also reached the quarter-finals. The Cherry and Whites couldn’t progress any further though, as they were beaten 16-3 by eventual winners Munster Rugby in the last eight.
