As we look forward to the Pool draw for the 2018/19 European Rugby Challenge Cup on June 20, in the next few weeks we will be taking a trip down memory lane into the competition's 21-year history. We begin with the 2000 final between Pau and Castres Olympique, with the former seeking to add to their only European honour so far, in 2019. 2000: Pau 34 Castres Olympique 21 Pau continued France's domination of the Challenge Cup as they became the fourth TOP 14 winner of the trophy in four seasons in the fourth successive all-French final. Captain and fly-half David Aucagne led by example at the Stade des Sept Deniers in Toulouse with 19 points from his reliable boot. He kicked five penalties and converted two of Pau's three tries, which came from flanker Nicolas Bacque (2) and full-back Nicolas Brusque. Pau led 21-6 at the interval, with two penalties from France full-back Thomas Castaignède being Castres' solitary first-half scores. However, they crossed the Pau try-line twice after the break through centre Eric Artiguste and Georgian replacement Levan Tsabadze. With Castaignède converting one and adding a third penalty, the teams were deadlocked at 21-21. Pau ran out comfortable winners, though, after Bacque scored his second try, Aucagne converted it and kicked two penalties. The TOP 14 outfit reached the final again in 2005 but were beaten 27-3 by English club Sale Sharks at Oxford's Kassam Stadium. The next time Pau reached the knockout stages was last season, when they won all six of their Pool 3 games against Gloucester Rugby, Zebre Rugby Club and Agen. After a thrilling 35-32 quarter-final victory over defending champions Stade Français Paris at the Stade du Hameau, they just fell short against the tournament’s eventual winners, Cardiff Blues, at Cardiff Arms Park in the semi-finals, going down 16-10.
