2002-03: Champions

Wasps clinched the title in their maiden Challenge Cup campaign, blitzing their pool by winning home and away against Overmach Rugby Parma and Union Bordeaux-Bègles.

They then beat Stade Français Paris 62-24 over two legs in the quarter-finals, before reaching the final with a 61-36 aggregate victory over Pontyprid.

The final at Reading’s Madejski Stadium was a 10-try thriller against Bath Rugby, with tries from Josh Lewsey, Fraser Waters, Phil Greening, Martyn Wood, Kenny Logan and Trevor Leota seeing Wasps run out 48-30 winners.

2009-10: Semi-finals

After six seasons in the Heineken Cup, Wasps returned to the Challenge Cup, dominating their pool once again as they won five of their six games, their only defeat coming at Racing 92 in Round 6.

They navigated Gloucester Rugby in the quarter-finals as a try hat-trick from Tom Varndell and further scores from Ben Jacobs and Serge Betsen helped them to a 42-26 win at Adams Park.

Wasps were hosts again in the semi-finals but were on the wrong end of an 18-15 scoreline as Cardiff Blues advanced to the final, the 2003 champions’ points all coming from the boot of Dave Walder.

2013-14: Semi-finals

The 2013-14 campaign saw Wasps march to the knockout stage of the Challenge Cup for a fifth successive season, with convincing home and away wins against Viadana, Bayonne and Grenoble.

There was another quarter-final clash with Gloucester at Adams Park, with Wasps emerging as 36-24 victors on this occasion.

The final eluded them again, though, as they were beaten 24-18 at home by Bath Rugby, Will Helu and Ashley Johnson notching their tries.

2021-22: Semi-finals

Although their European campaign started in the Heineken Champions Cup last season, it ended with them as EPCR Challenge Cup semi-finalists after they were relegated into the competition.

Their Heineken Champions Cup pool stage elimination saw them travel to Biarritz Olympique, where they battled to a 39-29 win, before coming out on top in a thrilling quarter-final at Edinburgh Rugby, who were edged out 34-30.

However, the final was once more a step too far, as they lost 20-18 at Lyon. Tries from Dan Robson and Jimmy Gopperth saw them run the eventual champions close.

With the pool draw for the 2022/23 EPCR Challenge Cup completed, we are looking at the clubs returning to the competition and the highlights of their past appearances, with Wasps next on the agenda.
