Toyota Cheetahs ensured both debutant South African sides would progress from Pool B as Siya Masuku’s last-gasp penalty earned them a 9-6 win over Section Paloise.

That win secured sixth place at the expense of Pau and set up a Round of 16 trip to Pool A winners RC Toulon, who made it four wins from four with a 14-5 home success over Zebre Parma.

Emirates Lions, the other South African outfit competing in the EPCR Challenge Cup for the first time, took third place in Pool B and clinched a home clash with Racing 92 after squeezing home 30-25 at Dragons RFC.

The Welsh region also advanced, but they missed out on the top four and subsequent home advantage in the Round of 16, where they were paired with Glasgow Warriors.

Glasgow came second in Pool A after being held to a 19-19 draw in an entertaining clash with Bath Rugby at Scotstoun Stadium.

That result moved Bath up to sixth momentarily, only for CA Brive to stun Cardiff Rugby 37-24, snatch the final qualification place and secure a trip to Scarlets.

Scarlets topped Pool B after their 20-7 success at Aviron Bayonnais made it four wins from four, while Cardiff’s three victories prior to their loss at Brive earned them third spot in Pool A and a home encounter with Sale Sharks.

Benetton Rugby claimed second place in Pool B as they ran out 35-32 winners in a thrilling battle with Stade Français Paris in Treviso, booking a home game against Connacht Rugby.

Connacht finished fifth in Pool A and missed out on home advantage as they were beaten 35-21 at Newcastle Falcons despite Finlay Bealham’s hat-trick of tries, while Stade Français’ fourth place in Pool B clinched a home tie with Lyon.

Bristol Bears came fourth in Pool A and so secured a home tie against ASM Clermont Auvergne after cruising to a 33-19 win over USAP at Ashton Gate.

Newcastle, Bath, USAP, Zebre, Pau and Bayonne all dropped out of EPCR competitions after failing to make the top six in the two pools.
