The first Challenge Cup meeting between the clubs ended in a comprehensive seven-try victory for Ospreys, the first of six wins for the Welsh region from their six Pool 2 games in the 2016/17 season.

Keelan Giles led the spree with a late double, while there were also tries for Dan Biggar, Rhys Webb, Ashley Beck, Scott Baldwin and Justin Tipuric.

Biggar finished with 15 points, as he also landed five conversions, to pass the 500-point mark in EPCR competitions.

Ospreys completed the double over Newcastle after storming back from 21-7 down at half-time to dash the English club’s hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals.

The Falcons looked to be well on their way to avenging their Round 1 whitewash when Daniel Temm, Rob Vickers and Chris Harris crossed for tries that were converted by Craig Willis, after Rhys Webb's early score for Ospreys was goaled by Sam Davies.

However, second-half tries from Hanno Dirksen, Sam Davies and Scott Otten allied to two more Davies conversions, ensured the visitors finished Pool 2 with a perfect record.

It was third time lucky for Newcastle as they secured their first win over Ospreys in the Round of 16 clash at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium in 2021.

This time it was Newcastle who rallied from behind, recovering from 14 points down in the first half to draw level by the break, before pulling clear in the second period.

Ospreys had surged 14-0 clear with tries from Keiran Williams and Dan Evans converted by Luke Price, only for Newcastle to equalise via a penalty try and a score from Trevor Davison that was goaled by Brett Connon.

Second-half tries from Sean Robinson and Christoffel van der Walt plus two more Connon conversions sealed the visitors' passage to the quarter-finals, with Ospreys’ reply coming from a Tom Botha try improved by Price, who also kicked a penalty.

Newcastle Falcons and Ospreys will meet for a fourth time in the EPCR Challenge Cup next season after being drawn together in Pool 2.
