2014: Munster Rugby 47 Stade Toulousain 23 (Thomond Park)

Munster breezed past Toulouse, running in tries through Keith Earls, Dave Kilcoyne, CJ Stander, Casey Laulala, Simon Zebo and Paul O’Connell to set up a semi-final with RC Toulon.

Earls’ score out wide put Munster ahead on four minutes, before Ian Keatley, who tallied 17 points for the Irish province, exchanged penalties with Toulouse’s Luke McAlister for the remainder of the first half.

Munster ultimately went into the break 13-9 up, but extended their advantage less than two minutes into the second half as Kilcoyne powered over.

Stander then crossed from close range on 45 minutes, before prop Kilcoyne and Toulouse counterpart Yohan Montes were both shown yellow cards by referee Nigel Owens following issues at the scrum.

Hosea Gear finished brilliantly on 53 minutes to keep Toulouse in contention, but Munster notched a fourth try when Laulala dived over in the corner.

Toulouse’s Joe Tekori crashed over with just under 10 minutes to play to reduce the deficit to 12 points, but Zebo and O’Connell dotted down late on to wrap up a convincing win for Munster.

2017: Munster Rugby 41 Stade Toulousain 16 (Thomond Park)

Three years later, Munster claimed another convincing quarter-final victory over Toulouse as 21 points from the boot of Tyler Bleyendaal helped them book a semi-final with Saracens.

There was an early setback for Toulouse when Francois Cros was sin-binned for a late hit on Duncan Williams and Munster took full advantage as John Ryan crashed over on four minutes.

Bleyendaal converted and went on to kick two penalties over the course of the first half - as well as seeing a try ruled out by the TMO - but Jean-Marc Doussain slotted three penalties for Toulouse to leave the gap at just four points at the break.

Two Bleyendaal penalties either side of a CJ Stander try early in the second half strengthened Munster’s position, but Paul Perez raced over in the corner for Toulouse, Doussain’s conversion from an acute angle reducing the deficit to eight points.

However, Munster pulled clear over the final 10 minutes as Darren Sweetnam and Andrew Conway dotted down for scores converted by Bleyendaal, who also added his fifth penalty of the game in the closing stages.
