After Champions Cup quarter-finalist Johnny Sexton blew everyone away with his 45-metre drop-goal for Ireland in Paris last Saturday, it's the perfect time to take a look back into the archives at some of the most dramatic European Cup kicks.

2001 - Munster Rugby 23 Northampton Saints 21

The drop-goal that most reflected Sexton’s heroics last weekend was scored by Ronan O’Gara for Munster Rugby in this thriller at Thomond Park.

With 77 minutes and 55 seconds on the clock Munster put into a scrum on their opponents 10-metre line and from there they made history. The side went through breathtaking 40 phases to put and with 83 minutes and 37 seconds on the clock the man who became the European Cup's all-time leading points-scorer Ronan O'Gara, nailed a memorable drop-goal as calmly as you like.

2002 - Leicester Tigers 13 Llanelli 12

2001 European Cup winners Leicester Tigers reached the 2002 final in dramatic fashion as Tim Stimpson landed a massive penalty from inside his own half with just two minutes left on the clock to break Llanelli's hearts at The City Ground.

Leicester won a penalty 58 metres out and instead of going for the corner as many expected, Stimpson asked for the kicking tee.

His booming kick flicked off the crossbar and the left upright before going over to send Leicester into the final with the narrowest of victories.

2003 - Munster Rugby 33 Gloucester Rugby 6

Affectionately known to Munster Rugby fans as the ‘miracle match’, the Irish province needed to win by four clear tries and 27 points in order to quality for the knockout stage.

Munster cut into the deficit throughout the match, before John Kelly scored his second try late in the encounter to leave the Thomond Park side needing a conversion from Ronan O’Gara.

His kick was never in doubt, even though he admitted after the match he didn’t realise they needed it to progress to the knockout stages.

2009 - Cardiff Blues 26 Leicester Tigers 26 (Leicester win 7-6 on penalties)

After Cardiff Blues fly-half Ben Blair kicked a conversion to bring the sides level, the two sides entered extra time at the Millennium Stadium with a place in the 2009 European Cup final on the line.

After a scoreless 20 minutes the match went to a penalty shootout for the first time in European Cup history.

Cardiff flanker Martyn Williams missed his side’s eighth kick, allowing Jordan Crane to slot the ball over and send Leicester into another European Cup final.
