The former Irish international back-row bagged his first European medal in 2006 with a 23-19 win over Biarritz in Cardiff and repeated the trick two years later as Munster returned to the Principality Stadium to again see off French opposition, this time Toulouse in a narrow 16-13 success.

Speaking about his European successes, Quinlan said: “2006 was very special and I can’t discount that in any way because every player wants to play the whole match and be part of it and I got the injury and missed most of the season.

“But I didn’t care because it wasn’t about that. It was about all the other stuff that went on in years gone by and I was part of it and I felt very much part of it.

“I was the happiest substitute ever to get out onto the pitch for four minutes!”

Quinlan played a total of 78 matches in the European Cup, scoring 13 tries and winning seven Heineken Man of the Match awards, including one in the 2008 final against Toulouse.
