2018 Heineken Champions Cup winners Johnny Sexton, Tadhg Furlong and James Ryan were all on the scoresheet as Ireland saw off Scotland 27-3 in their Rugby World Cup opener in Yokohama. Leinster Rugby prop Furlong and lock Ryan both grabbed tries before half-time to put Ireland in a commanding position at the interval, while fly-half Sexton – who scored 53 points in the Heineken Champions Cup last season for the Irish province – chipped in with a conversion. Munster wing Andrew Conway also dotted down and when Munster scrum-half Conor Murray took over the kicking duties from Sexton, he slotted over a penalty. Ulster Rugby hooker and Ireland captain Rory Best also grabbed a try in the convincing success, with ASM Clermont Auvergne scrum-half Grieg Laidlaw notching Scotland’s solitary score from the kicking tee. Elsewhere, 2019 Heineken Champions Cup winners Jamie George and Owen Farrell helped England get their campaign off to a solid start with a 35-3 victory over Tonga. Exeter Chiefs’ Luke Cowan-Dickie, who replaced George in the second half, grabbed a late try. Wales kick-started their campaign with a 43-14 win over Georgia thanks to tries from Ospreys flanker Justin Tipuric and wing George North, plus Saracens full-back Liam Williams. Other try-scorers across the World Cup’s opening matches from Heineken Champions Cup clubs included Clermont flanker Peceli Yato in Fiji’s entertaining 39-21 defeat to Australia and Benetton Rugby fly-half Tommaso Allan, who also chipped in with four conversions as Italy beat Namibia 47-22.
