After France beat England 33-25 yesterday in the World Rugby U20 Championship final, we take a look at a selection of players that could light up the Heineken Champions Cup and Challenge Cup in the coming years. Jordan Joseph – Racing 92 Named the Breakthrough Player of the Tournament, French back-row Jordan Joseph has been extremely impressive with his hard running and outstanding defensive play. Joseph made his U20 debut in the opening match against Ireland off the bench, helping France claw their way back into the game after falling behind. His stats across the tournament were equally as impressive, with eight clean breaks, seven carry supports and 25 tackles made. He doesn’t turn 18 until the end of July, but has already sealed a move to 2018 Champions Cup finalists Racing 92 after a string of impressive performances for RC Massy Essonne Academy. Louis Carbonel – RC Toulon 19-year-old fly-half Louis Carbonel was another Frenchman to impress in Sunday’s final, scoring 23 of Les Bleus’ 33 points as he was able to control the game with his right boot. Carbonel is the son of the former Toulon player Alain Carbonel, and signed a two-year deal with 2018 Champions Cup semi-finalists earlier this year. He racked up the most points in the tournament with 60, as France remained unbeaten for the entire championship. Carbonel has already made five appearances for Toulon, and could be in line for a Heineken Champions Cup debut in the 2018-19 Pool Stages. https://twitter.com/ChampionsCup/status/1006148391116726272 Ben Curry – Sale Sharks England’s captain throughout the U20 Championship, Sale Sharks back-row Ben Curry has already made waves throughout European rugby in the last two years. The 20-year-old flanker has made 49 appearances for Sale, with nine of them coming in European competition. Curry led England’s U20 side in tackles made with 56, and also chipped in with three offloads, four carry supports and three clean breaks. His twin Tom Curry also plays for Sale Sharks, and has made two appearances for the senior England side. They have become only the fourth set of twins to play side-by-side in the Aviva Premiership. Demba Bamba – Brive Brive powerhouse Demba Bamba played a key role at the heart of France’s incredible scrummage throughout their successful U20 Championship campaign. The 20-year-old prop is a monstrous ball-carrier, having put in a blistering performance in his country’s semi-final success over New Zealand and gave a similar display against England in the final. The tighthead was crucial in the success of the all-conquering France scrum, which overpowered every side that stood in the home nation’s path. Despite Brive not being in the Challenge Cup next season, we expect to see plenty of Bamba back in European competition in the near future. Marcus Smith – Harlequins A name that is already likely to be known to European rugby fans, 19-year-old fly-half Marcus Smith made a splash in the Champions Cup last season, having scored 34 points from six matches for Harlequins. He was equally as impressive in the U20 Championship, scoring 38 points as England reached the final before being defeated in a thrilling final in Béziers. Smith chipped in with three tries throughout the tournament as well as five clean breaks, two carry supports and a single offload. Although he is yet to make his full England debut, Smith was called into Eddie Jones’ senior squad as an apprentice for the 2017 Autumn international series after an impressive start to his Champions Cup season.
