Pool 1: James Ryan (Leinster Rugby) Last season the precocious 23-year-old continued to build on the outstanding impact he made in his first campaign of European rugby, when he played in all of Leinster’s games as they won the Champions Cup. Ryan, who has already played 20 Tests for Ireland, topped the Heineken Champions Cup tackle count in 2018/19 with 142 as Leinster again reached the final and was second in the carries list with 139. Pool 2: Jonny Gray (Glasgow Warriors) Line-out expert Gray has been at the heart of Glasgow’s scrum since making his European Cup debut in 2013. Last season the 25-year-old Scottish international featured in six Heineken Champions Cup ties as the Warriors reached the quarter-finals before falling to eventual champions Saracens. Pool 3: Sébastien Vahaamahina (ASM Clermont Auvergne) The giant Vahaamahina has been an imposing figure in the Clermont scrum for the past five seasons, playing 35 of his 45 European games for them, including 30 in the Champions Cup, where he has twice been a losing finalist. The mobile 27-year-old, who is a key man in the line-out with his height, is now a regular in the France side as well and has won 43 caps for Les Bleus. [jwplayer DYzPk07D] Pool 4: Leone Nakarawa (Racing 92) The sight of the 31-year-old Nakarawa charging around the pitch is one of the most exhilarating in rugby, as he has unrivalled handling skills and sidestep for a lock. While the 59-cap Fijian international was unable to repeat his heroics of 2017/18 - when he was named EPCR European Player of the Year after four tries in nine games – last season, he was still a thrilling presence for Racing. Pool 5: Franco Mostert (Gloucester Rugby) Mostert’s line-out excellence and industry around the pitch have earned him a regular place in the South Africa squad and the Gloucester side. While the 28-year-old lock made only two Heineken Champions Cup appearances last season, he will surely make his presence felt in Pool 5 if he receives game time this term.
