Today we begin a new series picking out five players to watch per position, one for each pool, in next season’s Heineken Champions Cup. This week it’s full-back and there are some major names among the five. Pool 1: Rob Kearney (Leinster Rugby) Ageing like fine wine, Kearney enjoyed yet another fine campaign for Leinster last season, helping them reach a fourth consecutive Champions Cup semi-final. The 33-year-old Ireland international, who has three European Cup winners’ medals, will look to add to his 81 appearances in European rugby and end a try-less run in the competition that has lasted six seasons. Pool 2: Stuart Hogg (Exeter Chiefs) Exeter Chiefs have looked on the cusp of producing something special in Europe’s elite club competition without quite reaching the heights required. Rob Baxter will be hoping that Scotland firecracker Hogg is the missing link. An outstanding full-back with ball in hand who has quick feet and the ability to glide through opposing defence, Hogg will aim to add to his 43 points in the European Cup. Pool 3: Anthony Watson (Bath Rugby) Dazzling feet, jaw-dropping speed and a point to prove – Watson will be looking to have a big season in the blue, black and white of Bath. The England international missed the entire European campaign last time out due to injury but will be eager to make up for lost time as he aims to cause havoc against Harlequins, ASM Clermont Auvergne and Ulster Rugby in Pool 3. Pool 4: Alex Goode (Saracens) The EPCR European Player of the Year last season was nothing short of extraordinary, playing every single minute of Saracens’ Heineken Champions Cup success. The playmaking full-back, who at times wore the No. 10 jersey last season, has been a vital cog in the North London club’s system for more than decade now and is set to continue in that mode. Pool 5: Thomas Ramos (Toulouse) Part of an electric Toulouse back three alongside Cheslin Kolbe and Maxime Medard, Ramos caught the eye with his devastating performances in the 2018/19 season. The 23-year-old full-back notched over 72 points from the tee in last season’s campaign – his first in the Heineken Champions Cup.
