As we approach Heineken Champions Cup semi-final weekend and the titanic clash between four-time winners Leinster Rugby and Toulouse in Dublin on April 21, we recall the teams’ second meeting of the season at the RDS Arena back in January. Having lost in Toulouse in Round 2, Leinster got their revenge on the French club with a 29-13 home victory in Round 5, leapfrogging them in Pool 1 in the process. Leinster were in command from the start, a Sean Cronin tackle leading to intense home pressure on the Toulouse line, which resulted in a penalty that fly-half Ross Byrne slotted between the posts for the opening score of the afternoon. Toulouse full-back Thomas Ramos hit back with a simple penalty of his own, but the scores were not level for long. Leinster spread play wide to the right and then back inside to No.8 Jack Conan, who powered past two defenders and over the line. Byrne executed a delightful cross-kick to wing Dave Kearney, who managed to stay in play long enough to dot the ball down for the home side’s second try. Leinster continued to pile the pressure on Toulouse and they eventually conceded a third try through hooker Cronin, which was improved by Byrne to pull the home side 22-6 clear. The Irish province achieved their bonus point try when replacement fly-half Jamison Gibson-Park fired a ball wide to wing Adam Byrne, who scored in the corner with ease. Replacement Noel Reid landed a superb conversion. A spectacular Cheslin Kolbe try and conversion rounded off a tremendous game, but it was nothing more than a consolation for Toulouse, who were well beaten.
