Montpellier led 26-0 at the break in their Round of 16 first leg clash, but Quins rallied well, with flanker Hammond among their second-half try scorers.

He told Quins’ YouTube channel: “At the end of the day, it’s 14 points between us. It was all quite positive at full-time.

“We are very confident we can take it back to the Stoop and do a job, so it’s all about coming out of the blocks next week.

“We said it was quite embarrassing, that first half result, so we just need to work on that for next week and just make sure we get it right.

“The key points at half-time were there's no excuses. Everyone has got to step up individually.

“I think it was the fact of boys manning up and taking on the role themselves.”

Hammond added: ‘It was a special day for me. That's my first start in the Champions Cup, so I enjoyed it, but result-wise we all feel like we could have given more and done better.”

Fellow try scorer Louis Lynagh said: “To a man we know the first half wasn’t good enough. There were a lot of errors we made, a lot of things we talked about that weren’t done.

“We did really well in the second half to come back and make it a closer game. We are really looking forward to getting better for next week.

“We have two more halves of rugby to come and we are looking forward to winning those two.”

Lynagh added: “At half-time, we said we’ve been in this place before and come back. We just told ourselves to believe.

“It was a hard scoreline to come back from and I think we did really well to win the second half.”

Both players praised Quins’ travelling support and stressed how vital they would be in the home second leg.

Lynagh said: “You guys have been amazing. Every single away game feels like a home game.

“Even when we were down 26-0, it was the same energy and you guys really galvanised us.

“Please come to the Stoop next week and really bring it because we will need it.”

Hammond said: “It was unreal. We had two blocks and there was constant noise. It was class.

“We will need them next week, 100%. They always get behind us. You can hear it on the pitch, we all feel it, so it’s exciting to take it back.”
