The 29-year-old has twice helped teams to the European Rugby Challenge Cup final – Edinburgh in 2014/15, in his first spell for the Scottish outfit, and Gloucester Rugby in 2016/17 - but has yet to collect a winners’ medal.

He played in four pool matches for Edinburgh in 2014/15 but not in any of their knockout games that term. However, he rectified that at Gloucester, being a key figure in the side who eventually lost 25-17 to Stade Français Paris in the final at BT Murrayfield, scoring four tries in seven games.

Scott will arrive at Welford Road with eight seasons of European rugby behind him, having made his bow for Edinburgh in the Heineken Cup in 2011/12, when the capital side reached the semi-finals before being edged out 22-19 by Ulster Rugby at the Aviva Stadium.

“Matt is an experienced international who will add vital depth to our squad from next season,” Tigers head coach Geordan Murphy told the Leicester website.

“Matt is the type of player we feel will fit in well at Leicester on the pitch with his tough, hard-working style and is a strong, good character who will add to our club off the pitch as well, which is important to what we are building at Tigers.”

Scott, who has won 39 caps for Scotland, described himself as “absolutely delighted” to be joining the Tigers, whom he labelled “one of the biggest clubs in Europe and an institution of English rugby”.

“It’s a team I watched growing up, winning a lot, and if someone told me as a teenager that I would play for Tigers, I wouldn’t have believed them,” he said.

“Looking at the quality of the team, the guys who have committed to staying and those who are arriving next season was a big draw for me.

“It will take hard work and tough people to get back up, but I have no doubt the right players and staff are at Tigers to do it.”
