The former British and Irish Lions prop made 59 appearances for Leicester Tigers in the European Cup, and featured in every game during their back-to-back title-winning campaigns in 2001 and 2002.

Since his retirement in 2007, Rowntree has had coaching roles with Leicester, England, the Lions, Harlequins and Georgia before joining Munster in 2019.

"I am delighted to be committing my future to Munster Rugby," he said. "I have made my thoughts about this club widely known throughout my time so far, and for me and my family it really has been an easy decision, a non-decision if truth be told.

“We've put down roots here and have no desire to move anywhere else.”

Munster head coach Johann van Graan has previously announced that he will leave the Irish province at the end of this season along with senior coach Stephen Larkham.

"I know there will be coaching personnel changes at the end of this season, but from where I'm standing, I know that we have everything in place for continued development and success,” Rowntree added.

Munster have recorded two wins from two in this season’s Heineken Champions Cup, beating Wasps (35-14) and Castres Olympique (19-13) in Pool B.
