In dismal conditions at Twickenham, centre Henry Slade put Exeter in the driving seat with a delightful first half try, running clear from just inside the Wasps’ half.

Fly-half Jacob Umaga put Wasps back ahead with a try under the posts but Joe Simmonds would kick two late penalties to give Exeter a three-point lead at the break.

Wasps equalised from the boot of Jimmy Gopperth and arguably had the better of the second half, but the Exeter defence proved too strong in the final 20 minutes and didn’t allow the Coventry-based side to score any further points.

Exeter captain Simmonds – who was Heineken Star of the Match against Racing 92 last week – nudged the Devon side ahead and secured the title with a last-minute penalty kick.

They have became the fourth side to complete the English and European double, emulating Leicester Tigers (2000/01 and 2001/02), Wasps (2003/04) and Saracens (2015/16 and 2018/19).
