The European Rugby Champions Cup quarter-finals kick off tomorrow with Scarlets' home tie against La Rochelle, so here we whet your appetite with some memorable last-eight ties in the European Cup: 2017 Saracens 38 Glasgow Warriors 13 Glasgow had made history with their first trip through to the knockout stages, but Saracens ensured it ended there with a comprehensive home victory to seal a semi-final spot for the fifth successive year. Owen Farrell led the way for the defending champions with 18 points, while Chris Ashton drew level with Vincent Clerc as the all-time leading try-scorer in the competition on 36 with two of the London club's four tries. 2016 Wasps 25 Exeter Chiefs 24 Jimmy Gopperth was Wasps' hero as he landed a last-minute conversion of Charles Piutau's second try to crown a magnificent fightback from 14-6 and 24-11 down. A first-half try double from Thomas Waldron had given Exeter hope of a first European semi-final, but the 2004 and 2007 winners dashed those dreams with that Piutau brace and a try from Frank Halai. 2015 Racing 92 11 Saracens 12 A huge, last-minute penalty by Marcelo Bosch sealed a dramatic victory for Saracens, after Maxime Machenaud had led Racing 92 to the verge of their first European semi-final by scoring all the Parisian side's points with a try and two penalties. Machenaud's try was the only one of the quarter-final as Saracens relied on the boots of Charlie Hodgson, Alex Goode and Bosch to see them through. 2015 ASM Clermont Auvergne 37 Northampton Saints 5 ASM Clermont Auvergne easily protected their laudable record of never having lost a home quarter-final and an unbeaten 22-match home sequence in the European Cup at the time. Nick Abendanon spearheaded the rout of the English champions by creating two tries – for Noa Nakaitaci and Wesley Fofana – and scoring another, while Brock James contributed 17 points from the tee. 2012 Munster Rugby 16 Ulster Rugby 22 This game is the only time Munster have lost a home quarter-final and was marked by a spectacular try from Ulster wing Craig Gilroy, who broke three tackles before crossing in the first half as the visitors opened up a 19-0 lead after 32 minutes. Munster hit back with a Simon Zebo try converted by Ronan O'Gara, who also landed three penalties, but a second-half penalty from Ruan Pienaar – his fourth of the match – clinched victory for the 1999 winners. 2011 Perpignan 29 RC Toulon 25 A record crowd for a European Cup quarter-final – 55,000 – witnessed a fine second-half comeback from Perpignan in the tournament's first visit to Barcelona to see off a Toulon side fielding the likes of Jonny Wilkinson, George Smith, Carl Hayman and Joe van Niekerk. Toulon outscored Perpignan by three tries to two, but Jérôme Porical's pinpoint goalkicking proved pivotal as he amassed 19 points from five penalties and the conversions of Adrien Planté's and Perry Freshwater's touchdowns. 2010 Biarritz 29 Ospreys 28 Damien Traille landed three drop-goals in front of a 32,000 crowd in San Sebastián as Biarritz reached their fourth European Cup semi-final and condemned Ospreys to their third quarter-final defeat in successive seasons. The Welsh region won the try count 3-2, but Traille's accuracy proved crucial as Dan Biggar missed a last-second drop-goal attempt. 2007 Scarlets 24 Munster Rugby 15 Scarlets reached their first European Cup semi-final for five years by dethroning reigning champions Munster at Stradey Park. The Welsh region virtually guaranteed their place in the last four by running up a 17-0 interval lead with tries from Dafydd James and Gavin Thomas, which left Munster – missing inspirational skipper Paul O'Connell – with too much to do. 2006 Toulouse 35 Leinster Rugby 41 Leinster produced a stunning performance to end Toulouse's 19-match unbeaten home run and send around 5,000 of their fans home happy as the Irish province qualified for the European Cup semi-finals for only the second time. Man of the match was their Argentinian fly-half, Felipe Contepomi, who, in addition to kicking 21 points, masterminded three of their four tries. 2002 Bath Rugby 10 Llanelli 27 Stephen Jones single-handedly dashed Bath's European Cup dreams with an immaculate display of goalkicking in the rain at the Recreation Ground. The Welsh international fly-half kicked eight penalties from eight attempts and, for good measure, landed an injury-time drop-goal to follow a similar goalkicking display in the Pool stages against defending champions Leicester Tigers two weeks before.
